Cultivation Practices
Activity |
Description |
Soil |
Fertile and organic matter-rich loamy soil with a pH of 6.5-7.5 is suitable for barnyard millet cultivation. |
Climate |
This crop can be sown in both Rabi and Kharif seasons. Temperature: 25-30°C. Annual rainfall: 1000 mm. |
Sowing Time |
June - July or September - October. |
Seed Rate |
Row Method: 3-4 kg per acre. Broadcasting Method: 5-6 kg per acre. |
Seed Treatment |
Biological Treatment: Treat 1 kg seed with 5 gm Trichoderma viride or 10 gm Pseudomonas fluorescens. Chemical Treatment: Treat 1 kg seed with 2 gm Thiram 75 WP or 2.5 gm Carbendazim 50 WP. In termite-affected areas, treat 1 kg seed with 4-5 ml of Chlorpyrifos 20 EC. Dry the seeds in the shade after treatment. |
Fertilizer Management |
Use fertilizers based on soil test report. Urea: 35 kg per acre Single Super Phosphate: 50 kg per acre Muriate of Potash: 14 kg per acre |
Sowing |
Maintain a distance of 10 cm between plants and 25 cm between rows. Sow seeds at a depth of 3-4 cm. |
Water Management |
Irrigate the barnyard millet crop 3-4 times based on soil moisture and local weather conditions. Avoid waterlogging in the field. |
Weed Management |
Within 0-3 days of sowing use weedicide. Mix 200 gm Isoproturon 50 WP or 40 ml Oxyfluorfen 23.5 EC in 200 liters of water and spray it in one acre. |
Harvesting |
Harvest the crop when it is completely mature. Cut the crop from ground level with the help of sickle. Make heaps of the crop and dry it in the field for a week. After drying, do threshing of the crop. |
Yield |
Yield varies based on variety, soil quality, and rainfall. The average barnyard millet yield is 15-16 quintals per acre. |
Pest Management
- Shoot Fly
- Symptoms: Central shoot dries up (dead heart) in the early stages of the crop, affected plants produce less tillers.
- Control: Treat per kg seeds with 10 gm Thiamethoxam 70 WS or 10 gm Imidacloprid 70 WS before sowing. For standing crop, mix 500 ml Quinalphos 25 EC in 200 liters of water and spray it in one acre area.
- Stem Borer
- Symptoms: Holes in the stem, drying of the leaves, ears turn white.
- Control: Mix 400-600 ml Profenofos 40 + Cypermethrin 4 EC or 1 liter Chlorpyrifos 20 EC in 200 liters of water and spray it in one acre area.
Disease Management
- Downy Mildew
- Symptoms: Infected plants remain stunted, produce fewer ears, black patches appear.
- Control: Mix 250-300 ml Hexaconazole 5 SC or 400-600 gm Mancozeb 75 WP or 120-160 gm Triadimefon 75 WP in 200 liters of water and spray on one acre.
- Rust
- Symptoms: Black spots appear on the leaves, drying of the leaves up, less grain formation in the affected plant.
- Control: Treat per kg seeds with 2 gm Thiram 75 WP or 2 gm Captan 70 WP before sowing. For standing crop, mix 200 ml Hexaconazole 5 SC or 400-600 gm Mancozeb 75 WP or 200 ml Azoxystrobin 18.2 + Difenoconazole 11.4 SC in 200 liters of water and spray it in one acre area.
- Smut
- Symptoms: Grains turn into galls, turns into pinkish green colour and in severe infestation it turns into black powdery mass
- Control: Treat 1 kg seed with 2-3 gm Carbendazim 37.5 + Thiram 37.5 DS or 0.3 ml Tebuconazole 5.36 DS.
