Nursery Preparation

Select high-yielding varieties and sow seeds using pro-tray technique. Water the seedlings regularly.

Soil Preparation

Do soil testing and apply nutrients. Plough the field 2-3 times and mix well-decomposed farm yard manure.

Transplanting and Crop Management

Transplant seedlings in the field, do initial irrigation, and manage weeds. Provide support (staking) to the plants, manage irrigation, and control weeds.

Flower and Fruit Management

Monitor flowers and fruits, manage nutrients, and identify and control pests and diseases.

Harvesting

Harvest the crop when it matures.

Note: Choose the sowing month according to your state's climate and harvest based on crop maturity.

Varieties

  1. Arka Vikas: Medium maturing variety, disease resistant, yield - 250-300 quintals per acre.
  2. Pusa Ruby: Early maturing variety, good storage life, yield - 200-250 quintals per acre.
  3. Pusa Hybrid 4: Good fruit size, early maturing variety, yield - 300-320 quintals per acre.
  4. Swarn Ratan: High yield, good fruit size and color, yield - 300-350 quintals per acre.

Cultivation Practices

Description

Nursery Preparation

Use pro trays. Fill the trays with cocopeat, vermiculite, and perlite in 3:1:1 ratio.

Or

Use 200 square meter area to prepare a nursery of one acre area. Transplant seedlings to the main field after 30-35 days.

Climate

Dry and warm weather.

Temperature: 20-35°C

Annual rainfall: 500-700 mm

Sowing Time

From the end of June to the beginning of July.

Seed Rate

For preparing nursery of one acre use :

Hybrid varieties: 120 grams

Other varieties: 200 grams

Seed Treatment

Biological Treatment: Treat 1 kg seed with 5 gm Trichoderma viride or 10 gm Pseudomonas fluorescens.

Chemical Treatment: Treat 1 kg seed with 2 gm Thiram 75 WP or 2.5 gm Carbendazim 50 WP. In termite-affected areas, treat 1 kg of seed with 4-5 ml of Chlorpyrifos 20 EC.

Dry the seeds in shade after treatment.

Soil Preparation

Loamy soil is suitable for tomatoes. The soil pH should be 6.0-7.5. Plough the field 2-3 times and mix well-decomposed farm yard manure.

Main land Fertilizer Management

Use fertilizers based on soil test report.

Urea: 90 kg per acre

Single Super Phosphate: 150 kg per acre

Muriate of Potash: 40 kg per acre

Transplanting

Maintain a distance of 15-20 cm between plants and 45 cm between rows.

Mulching

Do mulching with the help of black or transparent mulch film of 30 microns thickness.

Mulching preserves soil moisture and maintains soil temperature during summer time.

Mulching also prevents weed population.

Staking/Trellising

Provide support to plants by tying them with threads and allow them to grow upwards.

Water Management

Tomato crop requires 3-4 irrigations. Irrigate the field based on soil moisture and local weather conditions.

Weed Management

Within 0-3 days of sowing use weedicide.

Mix 300 grams of Metribuzin or 1 liter of Pendimethalin 30 EC in 200 liters of water and spray it in one acre area.

Gap Filling

Transplant new seedlings in the place of damaged plants.

Pruning

Do timely training and pruning to maintain proper shape of the plant. This helps to take good care of plants along with proper nutrient and air circulation. It also makes other farming activities (including spraying chemicals) much easier

Harvesting

Do harvesting when fruits turn into red colour and get matured by twisting motion of hand separate fruits from the stem.

Yield

Yield varies based on variety, soil quality, and rainfall. The average tomato yield is 200-300 quintals per acre.

Disease Management

  1. Damping Off
  • Symptoms: Seeds do not germinate, rotting of the roots, wilting of the plant.
  • Control: Treat per kg seed with 2 gm Thiram 75 WP or 2 gm Captan 70 WP before sowing. In case of severe infestation, mix 1-2 gm Chlorothalonil 75 WP or 1-1.5 gm Metalaxyl 8 + Mancozeb 64 WP in one liter water and do soil drenching.
  1. Fusarium Wilt
  • Symptoms: Lower leaves turn yellow and wilting of the new leaves, stunted plant growth, drying of the plant.
  • Control: Treat per kg seeds with 2 gm Thiram 75 WP or 2 gm Captan 70 WP before sowing. In case of severe infestation, mix 1 ml Azoxystrobin 18.2 + Difenoconazole 11.4 SC or 0.6-0.8 gm Tricyclazole 75 WP in one liter water and do soil drenching.
  1. Anthracnose
  • Symptoms: Brown spots on the leaves, drying of the leaves, in severe infestation spots appear on the fruits.
  • Control: Mix 200-400 gm Chlorothalonil 75 WP or 400 gm Mancozeb 75 WP in 200 liters of water and spray it in one acre area.
  1. Early Blight
  • Symptoms: Brown spots appear on the leaves, leaf margins turn yellow, rotting of the fruits.
  • Control: Mix 400 gm Mancozeb 75 WP or 500-600 gm Copper Oxychloride 50 WP in 200 liters of water and spray it in one acre area.

Pest Management

  1. Leaf Miner
  • Symptoms: White to grey lines on the leaves, black spots on the fruits, premature leaf drop.
  • Control: Mix 360 ml  Cyantraniliprole 10.26 OD or 80-100 ml Imidacloprid 17.8 SL in 200 liters of water and spray it in one acre area.
  1. Whitefly
  • Symptoms: Yellow spots on the leaves, curling of the leaves, presence of honeydew on the plant.
  • Control: Mix 80 ml Imidacloprid 17.8 SL or 40-60 gm Acetamiprid 20 SP or 90-120 ml Thiacloprid 21.7 SC in 200 liters of water and spray it in one acre area.
  1. Fruit Borer
  • Symptoms: Holes in fruits and leaves.
  • Control: Mix 300 ml Fipronil 5 SC or 60 ml Spinosad 45 SC in 200 liters of water and spray it in one acre area.
